Val McDermid was born on June 4, 1955, in Fife Scotland.

She went to Kirkcaldy High School before going to Oxford University.

After her degree, Val became a journalist and wrote her first novel Report for Murder: The First Lindsay Gordon Mystery in 1987.

She has since become one of the most popular crime writers in the UK and even co-founded the Harrogate Crime Writing Festival.

When did the Tony Hill character first appear?

Val's famous character Tony Hill first appeared in 1995 in her novel The Mermaids Singing.

The book was later adapted into the pilot episode of ITV's television series Wire In The Blood starring Robson Green and Hermione Norris.

The book is set in an English city where men are being abducted and tortured using horrific medieval techniques.
