Mum claims daughter, 3, 'could've been poisoned' after being sold nail polish remover instead of ant

A HORRIFIED mum has claimed that her three-year-old daughter could have been poisoned after being sold nail varnish remover instead of antihistamine in Boots.

Elizabeth Boot, 26, asked mum, Pam Boot, 53, to buy antihistamine and chamomile oil for her child who has chicken pox - however she was stunned when Pam got home having been sold a bottle of acetone.

Pam, from Radford, Nottingham, went into the Boots pharmacy in Gregory Boulevard last Thursday when the incident took place.

The grandmother said she asked for the items but it wasn't until she got home that she realised the mistake.

Pam said: "When I got home I looked at the bottle and it said acetone, which is nail varnish remover. It said 'household solvent' on the side and if I had given that to my granddaughter I don't know what would have happened.

"I was shocked. It was not just any kind of nail varnish remover, it is used to take off acrylic nails.

"I took it back and got a refund but not even an apology from the staff. It could have been very bad had I not realised what they had given me."

Pam's daughter, Elizabeth, who lives in Sneinton, says she is worried the same thing could happen to someone else.

She said: "It is a good job we checked the bottle but another person may have just trusted the staff member, after all that is what they are trained to do.

"I wanted my mum to buy some antihistamine and chamomile to soothe my daughters itching but this would have just made it ten times worse.

"It could have poisoned her, we would have ended up in hospital. I just want to make sure everyone checks what they have been given because this could have ended so differently."

She added: "We took it back and got a refund but it would have been nice to have an apology, there was no apology at all."

A spokeswoman for Boots said: "We are sorry to her about this error. If the customer returns to the store we can make sure she gets the right product this time."
